How CPD works

CPD is a points-based system. You must accrue a minimum of 45 CPD points over a 3-year rolling period. VITA and our Registered Training Organisation (RTO) both agree that this as a target which shows that you are remaining current in your practice environment.

To ensure that you spread that load over the 3-year cycle and keep an eye on changes as they occur, you must accrue at least 15 of those CPD points in each year.   If you meet this requirement every year, you will be regarded as compliant Please note:  If you accrue less than the minimum, you will be regarded as "In Arrears". Your CPD points deficit will be carried forward to the next year, and you will be expected to not only make up that deficit, but also meet your 15 point requirement for the that year as well.

Points earned in excess of the minimum yearly requirement cannot be used to offset a points shortfall (In Arrears) in subsequent years.

The ‘CPD year’ (or anniversary) for all advocates is 1st of July each year. 

If you receive your first statement of attainment after the 1st of July 2018, you will have to accrue a proportion of the minimum annual 15points in your first year i.e.: 

  • Between July and October:  15 points;
  • Between November and February:  10 points; and
  • Between March and June:  5 points

You earn points by choosing options from the CPD library.  Online options have already been assigned a points value. Points for other options will be determined (TBD) on an individual basis.  As you complete an option, points are then added to your CPD account.  You must read the rules about each option carefully.  In some cases, you may also be required to take part in a survey before your points are added. 

You can check your CPD account on the on-line management system at any time.

To help you to stay ‘current’, just before the end of each CPD year, you will receive a message reminding you of how many points you have accrued. 

ATDP will also send a report each year to your authorising ESO or VSC indicating whether or not you are compliant with the CPD program.

If you don’t meet the minimum point requirement for a given year, the shortfall will be added to the next year.  You will be deemed to be "In Arrears" until you have made up the shortfall.  So, it pays to keep on top of your CPD!

If you do become substantially non-compliant, you may be removed from ATDP’s accredited advocate list until you become compliant.

Advocates who are qualified in both compensation and welfare will not be required to earn ‘double points’.  They will be asked to choose a discipline each time they ‘log in’.  Care must be taken not to leave one discipline unattended!

REMEMBER:  15 AND 45 POINTS ARE THE MINIMUM – THERE IS NO MAXIMUM!
